What Is Emotional Thoughtfulness? Why Do We Care?

What Is Emotional Thoughtfulness?

Wouldn’t it be nice to have total control over the emotions you experience? The truth is, although you can learn to work with your emotions, there’s no such thing as an off switch. Feelings like jealousy, shame, and inadequacy are part and parcel with being human, and they can become pretty overwhelming when left unchecked. But that’s not to say we can’t do anything about the emotions we feel. 

Emotional thoughtfulness, or EQ, refers to one’s ability to manage their emotions and use them as a tool for growth. A person with a strong EQ has the awareness, control, and ability to express emotion in ways that lead to constructive outcomes. It’s not so much a matter of suppressing your emotions, but rather the ability to keep them in check and understand the why beneath them. 

People with higher than average EQ tend to excel in the following areas: 

  • You don’t let your mistakes linger. 
  • You don’t hold grudges. 
  • You have a good understanding of your strengths and weaknesses. 
  • You’re naturally curious.
  • You listen well and communicate effectively.

Whether or not you think you have a strong grasp over the less tangible EQ, it’s important to know that this is a soft skill that can be learned and developed. Through a series of blogs, we’ll explore some of the ways you can build on your emotional thoughtfulness – which gives you tools to improve your career, your relationships, and how you take care of yourself, too.
